Grower - Branko & Vasja Cotar

Father and son team, Branko & Vasja tend their 7 hectares of vines in the western portion of the Kras and produced their first wines from the 1988 vintage. The vineyards are planted to a mix of native varieties with mostly Teran, Malvazija, Vitovska and smaller amounts of Sauvignon, Cabernet & Merlot. The vineyards are densely planted with 7300 plants per hectare which yields less than a bottle per vine. Farming is done organically and winemaking is very traditional, no cultured yeasts, no temperature control, short 7 day fermentation with skins for the white wines and 20 days for reds ageing in large 2000 litre barrels and a very small addition of between 20-25 mgs of sulphur dioxide at bottling. We have shipped the exotic 2006 Malvazija and the vital and fine 2007 Vitovska.
