The Standish Wine Company was founded in 1999 when Dan Standish sourced a slither-like section from his families old block of Shiraz planted on Siegersdorf Road in Vine Vale.  From 1999 through 2001 Dan’s section of the block increased and by 2002 the entire block was controlled by The Standish Wine Company. Unfortunately in 2003 Dan’s parents separated and as such the entire property was sold. We have been working closely with the current owners over the last four years but numerous complications have resulted in 2009 being the last year that we will source fruit from this site.  Alas, our ‘core’ fruit source is now spread around a handful of grower’s who we greatly respect.  Dan began working with the Fechner family (Eden Valley) in 2004 and the Laycock family (Greenock) in 2005 which lead to the creation of ‘Andelmonde’ and ‘Borne Bollene’ - two single site wines with an elevage of 2 years each. In addition to the Fechner & Laycock families we have worked closely with Steve & Cecile Schubert since 2006 and more recently with Don Helbig, Stonegarden Vineyards and a few other select small growers. Our goal is to create single site wines from each of these vineyards when mother nature permits.

Dan Standish is an extremely experienced winemaker, adding work in the Napa and Sonoma valleys in California, La Rioja in Spain and the Rhne Valley in France to his domestic winemaking. In 1999 he was able to negotiate a small parcel of 96-year-old shiraz from his parents vineyard in the Vine Vale subregion of the Barossa Valley. This produces 300 dozen of The Standish, a wild yeast, open-fermented and basket-pressed shiraz matured in French oak for 30 months. The Standish, which uses his Rhne Valley experience led to the creation of The Relic, Shiraz (93%)/Viognier (7%) co-fermented, otherwise made with similar techniques.
